An aminoglycoside related to gentamicin. Used as a selective in molecular genetics in deference to ampicillin and tetracycline since it is toxic to bacteria, yeast, higher plant and mammalian cells as wella s protozoa. Resistance is conferred by one of two dominant genes of bacterial origin which can be expressed in eukaryotic cells.
